SEUS Workshop in Norway explores the future of smart European shipbuilding

The first workshop for the Smart European Shipbuilding (SEUS) EU Project took place on May 3-4, 2023, in Norway. The event, which aimed to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among industry partners, was held at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Ålesund on the first day and at the Ulstein Group in Ulsteinvik on the second day.

Open to the public on May 3, the workshop featured presentations from all partner organizations, covering topics such as the digitalization of the maritime industry, data models for maritime structures, innovation in shipbuilding, and emerging technology trends. The event provided a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the future of the European shipbuilding industry and explore potential collaborative efforts.

On May 4, consortium partners gathered in Ulsteinvik for a series of meetings and presentations. Ann Katrin Barstad, Design Manager, and Runar Muren, Managing Director of Ulstein Design & Solutions, introduced Ulstein Design and the company's innovation process. Participants also visited the Ulstein Museum, where they learned about the history of the Ulstein Group, and toured the yard facilities, with Jose Jorge Garcia Agis providing insights into how these facilities are designed to support the shipbuilding process.

Throughout the workshop, discussions focused on the role of computational tools in shipbuilding and how they can be further developed to support the industry's growth. Action points were identified for subsequent project phases, as the consortium looks to capitalize on the momentum generated by the workshop.

The event marked an important milestone for the SEUS project, with participants expressing appreciation for the opportunity to engage in face-to-face discussions and learn from one another. The project's work has already begun, and the next follow-up meeting is scheduled for October 2023.
