Case Fortum Heating & Cooling: Scattered information turning into clarity with digital twin software
Fortum’s Technical Manager Harri Ranta faced a challenge familiar to many. He had a flood of technical data that was scattered across disconnected sources. Finding specific information or understanding related content took excessive time and effort. This lack of integration prompted Fortum’s Heating & Cooling to seek a better way to manage and connect digital information assets.

Evaluating the digital twin market
Over a six-month period, Ranta evaluated multiple digital twin solutions. After reviewing several demos, CADMATIC eShare emerged as the best fit. According to Ranta, eShare was accessible, cost-effective, and a domestic solution Fortum was already somewhat familiar with through previous Cadmatic experiences and peer insights.
Getting started with eShare
The journey began in spring 2024 in collaboration with Elomatic, starting with point cloud scanning to explore how various data sources could be effectively used. After assessing different 3D model providers, the project launched surprisingly quickly, quite uncommon for IT-driven initiatives! Within six months, Fortum had uploaded substantial material to eShare, including documentation, point clouds, and 3D models. This content is now interconnected and nearly ready for full-scale deployment.
Building a system that works
While the platform setup was swift, the real effort went into improving source data quality. As with any system, poor input leads to poor output. Fortum focused on ensuring the accuracy and consistency of documentation and data connections.
“Currently, eShare links to Fortum’s maintenance and documentation systems through lightweight linking, except for document management, where an interface allows direct reading of document data. This pragmatic approach has proven both effective and user-friendly,”
How eShare improves workflows
According to Ranta, workflows begin in the maintenance system with tasks and observations.
“When deeper insight is needed, users can seamlessly transition to eShare to locate equipment, check site conditions, and access all relevant documents in one place. This interlinked ecosystem helps us to make faster and more informed decisions.”
While adoption is gradual across Fortum’s business areas, hands-on demos and “aha” moments are accelerating internal engagement.
Remote access and safety benefits
eShare’s documentation features have already received excellent feedback. At remote, unstaffed sites, 3D models and documents provide virtual access, saving both time and manpower. Looking ahead, one of the most promising applications is enhanced plant safety. During work preparation, eShare can help visually identify safe zones and plan disconnections from electrical or process systems. The next steps include integrating 3D visualizations into safety plans and exploring AI-powered safety recommendations based on task and location.

Strong collaboration and support
Ranta describes the partnership with Cadmatic as smooth and supportive. Regular check-ins help maintain quality and ensure continuous progress.
“Their professionals are clearly in the right field. They are very helpful, and the support requests are handled efficiently.”
Ranta would like to see Cadmatic remaining responsive to evolving customer needs when developing new functionalities.
Laser scanning with Elomatic
Elomatic played a key role in Fortum’s early adoption, helping with point cloud scanning and on-site digitization.
“They scanned two smaller production sites in 1-2 days that included photography and reference measurements. They were professional and the output was flawless.”
For facilities lacking 3D models, scanning remains essential. Fortum uses point clouds and 360° images for maintenance, and full 3D modeling for design; choosing the approach based on operational need.

Looking ahead: eShare’s next evolution
Ranta sees this as the beginning of a new phase - expanding functionalities with a strong focus on safety and AI-driven insights, such as enriching maintenance planning with manufacturer data. Cadmatic is committed to meeting Fortum’s needs and collaborating as a strong partner in their ongoing digital transformation journey. The vision is clear: build smarter, safer plants - powered by well-connected data and continuous collaboration.
